Hi there! I'm sorry you were disappointed with this recipe. The lotion bar recipe in this PDF is the exact recipe we use for our lotion bars, along with some tips and tricks for increasing batch size and formulating your own essential oil blends. I really did try to add as much value as possible, rather than just writing the recipe, which as you pointed out, would only be about a page or two. Please note that many of the links you speak of are NOT affiliate links. We do not have an affiliate relationship with Brambleberry or New Directions Aromatics, for example, which is where many of the links go.
The reason we decided to include links in this recipe is because I get a ton of emails from people that have purchased our recipes asking where we get our supplies and/or ingredients. The links within the recipe are a way for us to help answer those questions that many people have which helps reduce the amount of emails we receive with similar questions. I also know that if one person emails me with a question, there are probably ten other people wondering the same thing that never email me. It truly is something we added to help people, not to make money, as you seem to be implying.
The recipe does go into recipe formulation and how you can add more beeswax to create a harder bar. You can also try adding cocoa butter instead of shea for something harder. In fact, I've responded to a few emails asking for help with this very thing. I really try my best to do what I can to help everyone with the recipes and spend many hours a week answering emails to help support your purchase.
For anyone reading this review, please know that the 'plugs' are really not plugs. They are genuine links to exactly what we use in our soap studio and it is a question we get often about our recipes. Just so you're aware, if a link goes to Amazon, it probably is an affiliate link since we do have an affiliate relationship with Amazon, so I make sure to use the link if I happen to be recommending a product from Amazon, but I will never steer you towards a product that I do not use myself. We literally make a few cents if you end up buying that thing and it doesn't cost you any extra. The candle pitchers are used in my larger batches of lotion bars and I bought them off Amazon. The molds are from Brambleberry and I linked those directly (no affiliate link) because that is where I got them, even though similar ones are available on Amazon. The beeswax is from New Directions and I link to the exact one I use (no affiliate link again), even though you can probably buy beeswax off Amazon. There's nothing nefarious going on here, I swear! I am open to suggestions on how to include helpful links for people that want them, without the recipe feeling spammy. Perhaps I could put all the links at the bottom together in one section, for those interested. Feel free to email me with suggestions on this!
Finally, I write from my own personal experience and where I live here in Colorado, I've never had an issue with the lotion bar being too soft, so I haven't experimented with more beeswax or harder butters. If I had, I would have included this information in the recipe. But, I do suggest that you could do these things, if necessary. Many people have emailed me to let me know how much they appreciated all the extra information in this recipe, as education is always top of mind when I write the recipes. While it might be too much for some people, I do think that many concepts, like phototoxic essential oils for example, are not well-known and it's important to understand this stuff when formulating!
Having said all that, I appreciate your input and will take this into account in future recipes. :)
